Key takeaways

  • When juggling a day job with building a business, take a step back when you hit walls due to time constraints and develop solutions that work for your specific situation.
  • Building trust and relationships with potential brand partners requires reaching out to many people consistently, meeting them face-to-face, and understanding that you may need to contact 100 people to find the 5 right partners.
  • Stay authentic and honest in your storytelling and business approach, regularly doing self-checks and seeking industry feedback to avoid becoming delusional about your own ideas.
  • You must genuinely love the entrepreneurial journey including the problems and challenges, because if you can't embrace the struggle, the venture won't sustain itself over the years it may take.
  • Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision and can guide you, because you cannot accomplish large-scale entrepreneurial goals alone and maintaining those relationships is essential for long-term success.

[00:00] SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Candace Podcast.
[00:06] SPEAKER_02: Jerry? Yes!
[00:08] SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
[00:09] SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Candace Podcast.
[00:12] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[00:13] SPEAKER_02: Before we go much further, you've told me,
[00:17] SPEAKER_02: but I think it's intriguing if you can tell people a little bit about yourself
[00:25] SPEAKER_02: and your current entrepreneurial focus, if you want to.
[00:30] SPEAKER_01: Okay, thanks for the question, Phil.
[00:34] SPEAKER_00: I won't tell you that it's not complicated, but I am currently trying to set up television
[00:42] SPEAKER_00: property with the help of a few people in the realm of motorcycle racing and the people that
[00:50] SPEAKER_00: have race motorcycles.
[00:51] SPEAKER_00: We're trying to capture stories, a well-told story, and a well-told story should occur
[01:00] SPEAKER_00: within the realm that these racers are living in.
[01:04] SPEAKER_00: So it's an introduction, a storytelling, welcome to their world kind of story.
[01:12] SPEAKER_02: But, you know, just going back to our conversation earlier,
[01:18] SPEAKER_02: this is necessarily your full-time gig at the moment, okay?
[01:28] SPEAKER_02: What's been the journey so far?
[01:30] SPEAKER_02: I mean, how have you, you know, what got you here basically to this point?
[01:38] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a good question.
[01:41] SPEAKER_00: A lot of work, like you said, it's not my day job.
[01:45] SPEAKER_00: It is a concept I developed over the course of several years and I put a lot of energy,
[01:50] SPEAKER_00: a little bit of money into it.
[01:52] SPEAKER_00: I've been challenged by certain walls that you're running to because you're not full-time at it.
[01:59] SPEAKER_00: One of the things that we tell anyone is to make sure you get the help that you need
[02:03] SPEAKER_00: and the time that you need to do this.
[02:07] SPEAKER_00: And when you do run into a wall because you're limited in time, take a step back,
[02:13] SPEAKER_00: understand the problem, see if you can develop solutions that work for you.
[02:20] SPEAKER_00: Everyone's situation is a little different.
[02:22] SPEAKER_00: I have a day job that allows me my evenings to do what I need to do.
[02:31] SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the odd day to do what I need to do, you take your vacation and you make it work for you.
[02:36] SPEAKER_00: So a lot of planning when it comes to trying to juggle two different occupations.
[02:47] SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, in terms of that side of it, I mean, what made you get into it?
[02:54] SPEAKER_02: What is your area of expertise?
[02:57] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[02:58] SPEAKER_00: My passion, I've got a few.
[03:02] SPEAKER_00: I consider myself, I've been told, and I'm technically creative.
[03:07] SPEAKER_00: So I love art.
[03:08] SPEAKER_00: I love the science of motorcycle racing and all of the art of motorcycle racing.
[03:13] SPEAKER_00: Motor sports in general.
[03:16] SPEAKER_00: What made me want to produce something that an event of this scale?
[03:21] SPEAKER_00: This goes back to my childhood.
[03:25] SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you were in grade school, if you ever had to do school plays,
[03:31] SPEAKER_00: and your teacher would pick parts for who would have to do what I put up my hand for lights and curtain control.
[03:40] SPEAKER_00: I like the background technical aspects of setting up an event.
[03:47] SPEAKER_00: And that's what led me to create the motor sports events I was talking to you about earlier.
[03:52] SPEAKER_00: Well, before motorcycle wars, I was running a
[03:58] SPEAKER_00: Arriving drive programs.
[04:00] SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you're familiar with the woodbine racetrack in a towico.
[04:05] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[04:06] SPEAKER_00: So I used to rent that parking lot on Saturdays and Sundays and teach people how to drive formula 2000 race cars.
[04:13] SPEAKER_00: And that was a fun thing, but it was definitely an organizational insurance was involved.
[04:20] SPEAKER_00: So it was a safety organizational thing.
[04:22] SPEAKER_00: And that helped me.
[04:23] SPEAKER_00: I ran about 50 events and that helped me understand what it took to run a safe,
[04:28] SPEAKER_00: tight little motor sport event.
[04:32] SPEAKER_00: So my passion wise in producing events,
[04:37] SPEAKER_00: things that are larger scale than what I would do alone.
[04:42] SPEAKER_00: I love working with people.
[04:44] SPEAKER_00: That's a critical step in all of this.
[04:47] SPEAKER_00: I couldn't do any of this alone, of course.
[04:51] SPEAKER_00: And you've got to really understand the way people work and get their help and make sure you never
[05:00] SPEAKER_00: cannot be as anybody.
[05:02] SPEAKER_00: You'll be picked out pretty quick.
[05:05] SPEAKER_01: You've been at this for a few years now.
[05:09] SPEAKER_01: You know, how do you get that sort of from an idea to a business?
[05:23] SPEAKER_00: Well, you find anything that you can in the event that you're preparing.
[05:29] SPEAKER_00: First off, I should say that motor sports lends itself to brand partners, sponsorships.
[05:36] SPEAKER_00: In designing the event, you have to include how will this work?
[05:42] SPEAKER_00: How do you create value for a sponsor?
[05:45] SPEAKER_00: Someone who wants to become your brand partner?
[05:49] SPEAKER_00: How do you do that?
[05:50] SPEAKER_00: You got to hire professionals or at least talk to as many professionals as you can.
[05:54] SPEAKER_00: I was telling you earlier, this isn't super funded at this point.
[05:58] SPEAKER_00: The growth part of it, right?
[06:00] SPEAKER_00: I had to really pinch my pennies.
[06:03] SPEAKER_00: And I recently found some really cool people to work with who are helping with the idea of polishing up how I create that value for the brand partners.
[06:15] SPEAKER_00: If I don't find brand partners, I can't continue with this passion of mine.
[06:21] SPEAKER_01: It's critical.
[06:22] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[06:24] SPEAKER_02: So, you know, in the years we've been at it, being the same on brand partners, what would you say is the biggest challenge so far?
[06:35] SPEAKER_02: Let's say that you've overcome.
[06:38] SPEAKER_01: Okay. That's a great question.
[06:43] SPEAKER_00: The time that it takes to describe what you're doing, you've got to be really clean, articulate, as accurate as possible, and you've got to reach people.
[06:53] SPEAKER_00: And there's the limit of not being able to do this 100% of my day time.
[07:01] SPEAKER_00: You've got to meet people.
[07:03] SPEAKER_00: You've got to go belly to belly.
[07:05] SPEAKER_00: As I like to say, you've got to certainly polish your offer.
[07:11] SPEAKER_00: You've got to make sure it's to industry standards.
[07:14] SPEAKER_00: And you do that by talking to as many industry standards people you can.
[07:21] SPEAKER_00: And then when you're ready to make the offer, you've got to go and talk to as many people as you can.
[07:27] SPEAKER_00: If you reach 100, you might be lucky and get five and five is all you need.
[07:32] SPEAKER_00: But you've got to bring value to the brand partner.
[07:37] SPEAKER_00: You've got to work with them.
[07:38] SPEAKER_00: You've got to listen and find the right people to work with.
[07:43] SPEAKER_00: This isn't for everybody.
[07:47] SPEAKER_00: It's about relationships.
[07:49] SPEAKER_00: And you need time to develop that trust in that relationship aspect of things.
[07:55] SPEAKER_02: You've been building it.
[07:59] SPEAKER_02: We have lots of entrepreneurs who listen, view the show.
[08:04] SPEAKER_02: Some of them just starting on their journey.
[08:07] SPEAKER_02: What advice would you give to those folks who are thinking about taking an idea,
[08:14] SPEAKER_02: wanting to start a business?
[08:16] SPEAKER_02: What advice would you give to them?
[08:20] SPEAKER_02: You're still in the process after all.
[08:23] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm still in it.
[08:25] SPEAKER_00: Tenacity.
[08:26] SPEAKER_00: You've got to really believe what you're doing is the right thing.
[08:31] SPEAKER_00: And in order to believe it, you've got to be careful not to become delusional in your own thoughts.
[08:35] SPEAKER_00: So you do self checks and you do industry checks.
[08:39] SPEAKER_00: You talk to a lot of people.
[08:41] SPEAKER_00: What do you think of this?
[08:43] SPEAKER_00: I've done that many times.
[08:45] SPEAKER_00: The whole motorcycle war is property as developed by at least,
[08:51] SPEAKER_00: and I'm just bringing these, I could name them.
[08:53] SPEAKER_00: I won't just now, but I could tell you at least five people that had a major role in guiding it into what it is today.
[09:01] SPEAKER_00: So you've got to listen to people, meet people.
[09:04] SPEAKER_00: You can't excuse the language, piss anyone off.
[09:10] SPEAKER_00: You've got to be nice to everybody.
[09:12] SPEAKER_00: And you've got to stay in touch with them as often as you can.
[09:17] SPEAKER_02: You've got to build the trust.
[09:19] SPEAKER_02: What's the greatest challenge you've faced so far?
[09:22] SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it sounds like it's been a journey.
[09:28] SPEAKER_02: Yes.
[09:30] SPEAKER_00: So you know.
[09:32] SPEAKER_00: Right.
[09:32] SPEAKER_00: And honestly, Phil, you've got to love the journey.
[09:35] SPEAKER_00: If you don't love this journey, the problems and the challenges,
[09:38] SPEAKER_00: and you overcome them, right?
[09:40] SPEAKER_00: If you can't overcome something, take a step back.
[09:43] SPEAKER_00: It could be a few weeks.
[09:44] SPEAKER_00: It could be a few years that you step back.
[09:47] SPEAKER_00: But if it's still alive and it's worth it, it'll come back to the forefront.
[09:53] SPEAKER_00: Could you repeat your question on sorry, Phil?
[09:55] SPEAKER_02: Well, that was good.
[09:56] SPEAKER_02: Then you gave me, you gave me, you gave me an answer.
[09:59] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[10:00] SPEAKER_02: You know, I always ask this question about mentorship.
[10:04] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[10:04] SPEAKER_02: And, and, you know, what you've learned from others that you kind of applied to your current situation,
[10:14] SPEAKER_02: that you kind of carry around and, you know, have in your hip pocket, basically.
[10:21] SPEAKER_02: Well, you got anything like that?
[10:24] SPEAKER_00: There's a, there's a few things I met a great Canadian producer who helped me along the way.
[10:30] SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to storytelling, you got to be authentic.
[10:36] SPEAKER_00: You got to be honest.
[10:39] SPEAKER_00: And besides the idea of listening to people, you've just got to be telling the truth.
[10:47] SPEAKER_00: If you stay with the truth, being authentic, and since here, be yourself.
[10:52] SPEAKER_00: Do yourself checks.
[10:54] SPEAKER_00: That, that, I think that's not only good for the entrepreneur or for the person in business,
[11:00] SPEAKER_00: but it's, it's good for capturing stories.
[11:05] SPEAKER_01: Justin.
[11:08] SPEAKER_01: What do you think today is your biggest challenge?
[11:19] SPEAKER_00: Well, we're at the last phase of pitching the show.
[11:23] SPEAKER_00: And I think I've overcome the, the last biggest phase or biggest challenge, sorry.
[11:31] SPEAKER_00: And that was to reach out to as many brand partners as we can.
[11:37] SPEAKER_00: In other words, I, I'm working with some really brilliant people.
[11:42] SPEAKER_00: And they're going to be literally getting on the phones and helping me make contact and go belly to belly with these people.
[11:51] SPEAKER_00: So I think I've overcome my, my last major challenge.
[11:56] SPEAKER_01: But with that in mind, you know, what's the opportunity for you in the next five years?
[12:04] SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
[12:08] SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I, I feel like I've gone away from the, my last biggest challenge by working with these few people that are going to go belly to belly.
[12:20] SPEAKER_00: And I think that's really, the, the next thing is to produce the events.
[12:24] SPEAKER_00: And once the events are produced, the editing starts.
[12:29] SPEAKER_00: And we get to tell the story again in edit form.
[12:36] SPEAKER_00: And we're, we're hoping that the shelf life of the event, as well as the television property gets picked up.
[12:43] SPEAKER_00: That's the bottom line.
[12:46] SPEAKER_00: And I understand that motorcycle racing is, is, is the smallest in Canada.
[12:53] SPEAKER_00: North America is, is pretty good for motorcycle racing, but I see international sales happening in Europe and Australia for sure.
[13:04] SPEAKER_01: That's the direction we want to.
[13:06] SPEAKER_02: How do you keep?
[13:14] SPEAKER_02: I'm just curious because you know, this is obviously a vision that you had.
[13:19] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[13:19] SPEAKER_02: How do you keep that going?
[13:24] SPEAKER_01: I'm married to a wonderful person.
[13:27] SPEAKER_00: Who complete all the shows.
[13:29] SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
[13:30] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[13:32] SPEAKER_00: And it's in my heart.
[13:34] SPEAKER_00: I just keep going.
[13:36] SPEAKER_00: And I keep my eyes open for when there's a wall.
[13:39] SPEAKER_00: And I've got enough people to question, is that a real wall?
[13:43] SPEAKER_00: Can we jump this wall?
[13:45] Speaker UNKNOWN:
[13:45] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[13:46] SPEAKER_00: So it's in your heart, passion, you go, right?
[13:49] SPEAKER_00: And until you can't.
[13:51] SPEAKER_02: So.
[13:53] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[13:54] SPEAKER_02: We just have some fun ones.
[13:55] SPEAKER_02: Are you a morning or a night person?
[13:58] SPEAKER_02: Ha.
[13:59] SPEAKER_02: Both.
[13:59] SPEAKER_00: I love waking up early and I stay up late.
[14:03] SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
[14:04] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[14:04] SPEAKER_00: And that answer.
[14:06] SPEAKER_00: That's really interesting.
[14:06] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[14:07] Speaker UNKNOWN:
[14:08] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[14:10] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[14:11] SPEAKER_02: If you were doing what you were doing now, what would you be doing instead?
[14:16] SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a, that's a great question.
[14:21] SPEAKER_00: Well, we didn't get on to the idea of what I do during the day,
[14:24] SPEAKER_00: but I wouldn't be doing that.
[14:26] SPEAKER_00: I would be doing television production or something in the, something in the arts.
[14:32] SPEAKER_00: I went to Ryerson, polytechnical university.
[14:35] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[14:36] SPEAKER_00: And I was in the material science corridors, the science corridors.
[14:42] SPEAKER_00: I would walk by the radio television arts and I would look at that section of Ryerson and say,
[14:49] SPEAKER_00: that's not for me, just because I didn't like being in front of the camera.
[14:53] SPEAKER_00: But little did I know the real me is behind the camera, right?
[14:59] SPEAKER_00: Maybe I would have been a camera operator.
[15:01] SPEAKER_00: I would have been a damn good one too.
[15:05] SPEAKER_00: I love editing.
[15:07] SPEAKER_00: Editing was a lot of fun.
[15:08] SPEAKER_00: I didn't know anything about editing and Final Cut Pro comes out and wow.
[15:14] SPEAKER_00: It's, it's intuitive enough to, to, to use it.
[15:17] SPEAKER_02: Oh, actually, you're, you're still in a, let's call it an emerging entrepreneur.
[15:25] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[15:25] SPEAKER_02: So you've been doing, emerging for the last six, say, let's say five or six years.
[15:30] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[15:31] SPEAKER_02: What's the best thing about that?
[15:37] SPEAKER_02: Well, what's, I mean, maybe it's, maybe it's like not best at the moment.
[15:41] SPEAKER_02: The end it.
[15:42] SPEAKER_00: I've got the end game in mind.
[15:45] SPEAKER_00: I have a set goal.
[15:46] SPEAKER_00: I have such a vision.
[15:47] SPEAKER_00: I can see where I want to be.
[15:49] SPEAKER_00: And it's just so much fun trying to get to that spot without getting hurt.
[15:55] SPEAKER_02: Right?
[15:57] SPEAKER_02: So if you have one word to describe yourself and it can't be tenacious.
[16:02] SPEAKER_01: All right.
[16:03] SPEAKER_01: What would it be and why?
[16:12] SPEAKER_01: Passionate.
[16:13] SPEAKER_01: Can I use that word?
[16:14] SPEAKER_01: Because that good word.
[16:15] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[16:16] SPEAKER_00: I, uh, passion.
[16:21] Speaker UNKNOWN: I, uh, passion.
[16:21] SPEAKER_00: It's just coursing through my veins for accomplishing a goal that's bigger than me.
[16:27] SPEAKER_00: Right?
[16:28] SPEAKER_00: Having working with people is something I love to do.
[16:32] SPEAKER_00: And that's actually a lot of fun.
[16:34] SPEAKER_00: When you can nail relationships, uh, that's very fulfilling.
[16:41] SPEAKER_00: And to accomplish a goal like this, uh, you need people.
[16:45] SPEAKER_00: And if you get people that stick around for the, the long haul.
[16:49] SPEAKER_00: And I have a few.
[16:51] SPEAKER_00: Uh, that, that's a wonderful thing.
[16:53] SPEAKER_00: So you keep the end game in mind.
[16:55] SPEAKER_00: And when you're, when you're, when you're walking along this passionate trail.
[17:00] SPEAKER_00: Uh, don't forget who helped you.
[17:03] SPEAKER_00: Uh, they'll be right beside you.
[17:05] SPEAKER_00: Uh, and keep the goal in mind.
[17:07] SPEAKER_00: Keep the end game in mind.
[17:09] SPEAKER_01: You really need that.
[17:10] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[17:13] SPEAKER_01: Let's keep you in a wallet night these days.
[17:20] Speaker UNKNOWN: Um, well.
[17:24] SPEAKER_00: Um, making sure I render what puzzle pieces I have to put.
[17:31] SPEAKER_00: Where to make this thing work.
[17:33] SPEAKER_00: So I'm, I'm think, I think a lot, I draft a lot of notes.
[17:38] SPEAKER_00: Nothing really.
[17:39] SPEAKER_00: Can't, I sleep pretty well.
[17:41] SPEAKER_00: It doesn't keep me up.
[17:42] SPEAKER_02: I just, I think a lot.
[17:44] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[17:44] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[17:46] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[17:47] SPEAKER_02: Interesting idea.
[17:49] SPEAKER_02: How can people get, I mean, I'm, you know, and it's a, it is a passion.
[17:54] SPEAKER_02: I can see that it's a passion menu.
[17:56] SPEAKER_02: You know, how can people get a hold of you if they see that and they go.
[18:02] SPEAKER_02: I like that.
[18:03] SPEAKER_02: I need to find out more about it.
[18:05] SPEAKER_02: How can people get an old review?
[18:07] SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, they can certainly call me.
[18:09] SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know exactly what you want, but motorcycle wars.tv is the, the website.
[18:17] SPEAKER_00: Okay.
[18:18] SPEAKER_00: My contact information is there.
[18:21] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[18:22] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[18:22] SPEAKER_02: That's, that's really it because it's amazing.
[18:25] SPEAKER_02: People watch him.
[18:26] SPEAKER_02: It's, I know that after the fact there's a lot quite a lot of conversation.
[18:32] SPEAKER_02: That's why we always ask that question.
[18:33] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[18:34] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[18:34] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[18:34] SPEAKER_02: I think it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's an interesting thing.
[18:38] SPEAKER_02: I think we're going to follow you guys and see what you, see what you go and see what's happening.
[18:44] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[18:44] SPEAKER_02: So, uh, sure.
[18:45] SPEAKER_02: So I think, uh, thanks, thanks for coming on.
[18:48] SPEAKER_02: I think it's been really, really good.
[18:50] SPEAKER_02: Um, I like the passion.
[18:53] SPEAKER_02: I like that you're hanging in.
[18:56] SPEAKER_02: I think, uh, you know, you're on entrepreneur.
[18:59] SPEAKER_02: So let's, uh, let's get it, get it there.
[19:02] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[19:03] SPEAKER_02: I agree.
[19:04] SPEAKER_02: 100%.
[19:06] SPEAKER_02: Thanks for coming on the canvas podcast.
[19:08] SPEAKER_02: That's great.
[19:08] SPEAKER_02: Thank you very much, Philip.
